Background
My lifelong love of photography and the communication of ideas has led me on a journey through commercial, creative and pedagogic practice.
Prior to working in photography and education I had a long career in the commercial sector and creative industries, working in marketing on both client and agency side, commissioning the services of writers, designers and photographers. My interest in the photographic image and the power of visual communication led me to become a photographer.
Since going freelance in 1999 I have worked as a commercial photographer and have been published as a photographic artist. My personal practice is based around the landscape of the South West and has been exhibited regionally and nationally in the ‘Landscape Photographer of the Year’ awards, and in 2009 was featured in the ‘What Haunt’s You?’ exhibition at the Photographers’ Gallery in London.
I began teaching photography in 2006, developing my pedagogic practice in both Further and Higher Education. While continuing to develop my own photographic interests, education within contemporary photographic culture has now become my passion. In 2013 I was appointed as Programme Leader for Undergraduate Photography at Plymouth College of Art, and from 2015 to 2021 I led the BA (Hons) Commercial Photography Degree. I have worked as an external examiner for photography degrees at the University of Plymouth, Bournemouth University and London College of Fashion.
In 2021 I was appointed as Principal Lecturer at what is now Arts University Plymouth, and in 2022 was appointed as Assistant Dean. I now have responsibility for all of the Arts and Media undergraduate courses at the University, alongside various aspects of the cross university curriculum, including student experience and employability. I work on a number of committees including Student Experience, Research & Innovation, and Academic Board. I am also one of the elected staff members on the University's Board of Governors.
Whilst my academic role and family commitments now occupy the majority of my working week, I still devote time to developing my photographic practice, and I am in the process of developing a new project exploring the culture and economy of seaside towns in the South West.
